Time left?

My mum has just been diagnosed with stage 3 cancer. Doctors say they can't operate or give any other treatment. Can anyone share experience? I don't know how much time I have left with her. It scares me to not know if it's months or years?? I think she is too scared to ask or would rather focus on life than death which I understand but I would rather be prepared.

Any experiences where no treatment is given would be welcome as this is closest to mum's experience.

It is very strange to say there is no treatment available. Maybe she has other conditions? I would say get her to an academic medical center that deals with high volume esophageal cancer patients. My husband is Stage 3 has had chemo, chemo and radiation and surgery. He is now NED ( no evidence of disease) and living a very good life. I wish the same for your mom. There is another support group on the internet call smart patients, they have a very active Esophageal cancer group, I would encourage you to research there as well. There is hope. All my best Rosemary

Stage 3 cancer should be curable. Get a second opinion.

Thank you both so much for replying. My mum also has another condition. This means her body couldn't cope with treatment unfortunately. So I am left with trying to estimate how long I have left with her and how quickly things can turn for the worse. I am thinking this will be more a matter of months, a year if we are lucky? She already has symptoms of only being able to eat very soft foods. It's all just too sad and painful. I am not ready to lose her. It doesn't seem real. Again, many thanks. If anyone else has had similar experience please share.

Check out Raigda Jeha on YouTube. She has been living with stage four stomach cancer for much longer than the doctors told her she had . I know this is esophageal cancer but it is similar to stomach cancer from what I know. She does a lot of other therapies and she looks really healthy. I am really sorry for you and your mother. Cancer sucks!

Thank you for replying.

I will explore this woman's story. All we can do is hope for a little bit of quality time and then a bit more!

Thank you, best wishes

Her story is very inspiring. I know when my husband was first diagnosed I was preoccupied with death and dying. It made living difficult. Someone pointed out to me "he's not dying today" made it easier to focus more on the present. Yes he is here today and we have today together! There is a book called surviving cancer against all odds. It also is an inspiring compilation of the stories of cancer survivors. I wish you and your mom the best. She is very lucky to have you. Stay strong and positive, one day at a time. Blessings, Rosemary

Thank you

My mum has accepted everything, I just need to catch up and start to try to be as positive as possible. I am not very strong but I know I need to be for her. I want her to enjoy the rest of her life. Thank you for the advice, it has really helped. I do need to shift the focus.

All the best
