Thyrogen/RAI next week - extremely nervous

Hi all,

My post is a little last minute considering my first thyrogen shot is Monday 6/19... but I'm hoping some of you can offer some reassurance/encouragment.

I have a tremendous fear of nausea and vomitting and am very nervous about the possibility of getting sick from the thyrogen shots and/or the RAI. I've put off this treatment for almost a year due to this fear :(

I'd appreciate it if anyone could share their personal experiences with the shots and the RAI, or offer any advice.

Thank you!

You should have nothing to fear.  I had RAI with thyrogen and it was very unremarkable.  The anticipation before the treatment was the only difficult part of the treatment for me.

Take the time to rest, treat it like a vacation and enjoy some quiet days and nights.

I had the same fear before thyrogen/rai and didn't have any symptoms at all during them! Of course everyone's different and you may experience some symptoms, but try to remain calm and positive and it will be over soon!

Don't know why this didn't get bumped to the top, so I'll try a bump.

Thanks. I want others to learn from my experience and take charge of THEIR own body.

Hi Dana979!

I am feeling great! The RAI gave me no issues! In fact, I felt so "normal", I was concerned it didn't work. But fortunately, my scanned showed that my body did uptake the RAI and appears to be doing exactly what it's supposed to.

Following the RAI, my sense of taste diminshed a bit and I had a metallic taste, but it only lasted a couple of weeks. I am very grateful that I didn't have any nausea; however, I was taking zofran round the clock. I'm not sure if I would've had any nausea without it, but if that's a concern for you it definitely doesn't hurt to be proactive!

All in the all my experience was very unremarkable. I enjoyed the opportunity to watch a lot of TV, read, and relax outside. Keep yourself distracted and just remember why you are doing this and what is waiting for you on the other side!

Best of luck! Feel free to message me if you have any further questions!

So happy for you. Thanks for sharing:) I am taking zofran as well cuz I'm allergic to Iodine. I still feel a little nauseous but no vomiting. Drinking lots of water but couldn't eat anything yesterday. I am also experiencing a burning sensation near my ovaries. I hope the cancer didn't spread to other organs. Since I knew that the cancer has been in my neck for years, I am taking every symptom very seriously now. Not sure why I feel cold- I live in the desert, lol! It might be from the medrol I take to prevent an allergic reaction. The doctor said I should shower many times a day, but I'm feel too cold to shower more than once. Did you shower a lot? Spending time outside sounds great but not in my case. It's 110 degrees outside:D I have my iPhone wrapped in a ziplock bag. It has everything I need on it.

Glad to hear you're hanging in there! I hope you're feeling well today!

If it's any consolation, I had thyroid cancer in my neck for at least 2 years before I got RAI. And by the time I got the RAI it had spread twice to my lymph nodes...but it never left my neck. There was some concern that given how much time had passed that it might have spread to my lungs or bone but my doctor's said even if that were the case the RAI should take care of it. In any event, try not to worry yourself over something that might be nothing!

As far as showering goes, I showered twice a day for 4 or 5 days. I believe they recommend showering because some iodine can leave the body through sweat...but if you're freezing I doubt you're sweating enough that you need more than one shower ;)

Take care!
