My mother was diagnosed with glioblastoma on 7-21-04. It is inoperable-they say.Does anyone know of any surgeons that perform high-risk surgeries? My mother will start radiation and chemo next week. She's only 56 years old. Any info would be helpful.

sorry to here about your mother. I just had brain surgery at ucsf in san francisco. The surgen's name is Dr Mitchel Berger. He came highly recommeded by my doctor. www.ucsfhealth.org . When the page comes up it will say find a doctor type in his name, and you will see a whole page about him and how to get in touch with him. Two years ago this June they told my wife I would not live past three months. My doctor here could not take out much of the tumor because of where it is. In just two years the technology has advanced enough that on May 6th of this year Dr. Berger was able to get the whole tumor out. Please let me know how you make out. And please don't give up or let anyone tell you there is no hope, there is always hope , new medicines, new technology and new treatments. Take Care JS

Jeff, What stage was your cancer when first diagnosed? My mom was diagnosed with Grade IV on 8/16/04 and has had most of the large tumor removed. There is still a satellite tumor that remains because it is to deep in the brain to remove. What treatments did you undergo and what were the side effects? Please respond. Thank you. Sharon

Dear Sharon, I am glad you wrote back. I was first diagnosed with a giloblastoma multyform grade IV on 6-12-02. Then downgraded to a olygodendrom grade 2. Went through 6 weeks of radiation getting mri every 3 mth. In March of this year my doc in billings mt saw some to growth and recommed another surery. He highly recommened Dr. Mitchel Beger @ UCSF in san francico. He specilizes in these types of tumors. This hospital and this doc are on the cutting edge for brain surgeries. The web is ucsfhealth.org look for dr. bergers page. These people are wonderful to work with. Don't give up. They told my wife I would die in 3 mths after the first surg. I'm still going after 2 plus years. Lots of prayers and positive thinking. Don't stop looking. Good things are happening every day. GOD BLESS Jeff

Dr Timothy Spetzler at the Barrows institute in Pheonix AZ. He is supposed to be wonderful. I've also heard of Berger. My mom has a friend whose sister had surgery with him and she is doing great 10 years later (to remove an astrocytoma). We have an appointment with him in two weeks. Has anyone else had an experience with Dr. Spetzler? There is a book written about Spetzler called The Healing Blade. Denise

My dear friend (58) was just diagnosed on Wednesday, January 26 with inoperable Glioblastoma Multi Form Brain Cancer (3 on one side and one on the other). I have been trying to read as much as possible. We are going to see his neurosurgeon for the next step -- which they suggest is "flooding" the brain with radiation. I have a thousand questions. Can someone give me some thoughts as to the "flooding". Keep Allan and me in your prayers.

My wife has this same disease, diagonosed and operated on at Duke med in Durham,NC.

She will probably start chemo this coming week. Her surgeon was Alan Friedman, rated as one of the best.  We have no idea where we go from here.  I wish you the best.
