Bone Metastases- Renal Cell- Stage 4

My dad (age 69) was diagnosed with renal cell cancer in 2009 and had the kidney removed. No treatments were given following. Then in 2012 he had a tumor in the vena cava removed. Again, no treatments followed. Last week, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Renal Cell Carcinoma spread to the spine, ribs, hips and lymph nodes. Of the 3 affected thoracic vertabrae, one has a hole in it exposing the spinal cord. He is in severe pain and getting much worse quickly. He is scheduled for pain relief treatments starting next week (doc is out of town this week). Palliative care is all that is being offered. I am seeking advice on just how long we may have to watch him in the horrible pain and suffering?
