I have been on anastrozole for 2.5 years for treatment of stage 1 BC.  I now am experiencing arthritis and pain that accompanies it. I have heard that tumeric is good for pain but my doctor told me not to take it as it can mimic estrogen.

Hi, I have been taking anastrozole for 3+ years for stage 4 breast cancer, bone metastases. I have the arthritis type pains you mention, especially in my right thumb joint.  I also get a monthly injection of Xgeva for my bones and the pain can be a side effect of that. I've been adding turmeric to my foods for the last year and a half.  I haven't been taking capsules of it though.  There has not been a significant difference in the pain levels.  Just recently added in CoQ10 to see if that would help; it hasn't.  I found this info on the Susan G. Komen website:

"Turmeric contains a chemical called curcumin, which might act like the hormone estrogen. In theory, turmeric might make hormone-sensitive conditions worse. However, some research shows that turmeric reduces the effects of estrogen in some hormone-sensitive cancer cells. Therefore, turmeric might have beneficial effects on hormone-sensitive conditions. Until more is known, use cautiously if you have a condition that might be made worse by exposure to hormones."

Not very helpful, right? I have not had any differences show up in my blood tests or scans that would cause worry but I also don't ingest large amounts of it.  Before adding any herbs or supplements to your diet, always do a search on the supplement and estrogen effects before trying it.  Best of luck!!!!  Janet
