Possible cancer / no insurance or $ for biopsy

We live in Pittsburgh PA. My 26 year old daughter possibly has skin cancer and desperately needs a biopsy but we can not afford one. I am a single working mom and my daughter works two low pay jobs and we can barely make ends meet. Is there anywhere to turn for help. Free clinics advise an immediate biopsy and skin cancer screening places that offer free screenings also recommend a biopsy. This is SO SCARY! Thanks for any advise ! Worried Mom

There are numberous cancer hospitals and centers in Pittsburgh.  Please sit down and call every one of them until you find someone who will at least biopsy her.  My sister waited 3 months to go to the doctor, because her husband had a lot of health issues they were dealing with.  She finally wen and is now 5 months later, Stage IV Melanoma that metastisized to her lungs.  We will be lucky if she lasts a year or two.  PLEASE DO NOT let this go.  Someone will see her.  Call the American Cancer Society.

I am so so very sorry to hear about your sister. I will keep her, you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. I am beyond petrified for my daughter now. She is 25 and let this growing growth go for a couple years. We managed to get the biopsy and then insurance. They took 4 inches from her back tissue. They did this the day after visiting the dermatologist. That biopsy returned yesterday as melonoma. They got her an appointment with an oncologist this Friday who will tell us more. They are doing a second surgery next week to remove more from her back and also taking lymph nodes. This came back 1.2 breslow thickness or depth or something. I have never been so scared in my life. Waiting for this second biopsy to come back is going to be beyond horrific. I can’t believe this is happening and can hardly function. Ruth

Hi Ruth,  I hope things are going well for your daughter.  My sister started on Targeted Therapy because her tumor was BRAF positive and she just had a PET scan on the 4th of April and it was clear.  No evidence of cancer.  She had 3 spots on her previous scan, but they are gone.  This does not mean she is totally cancer free, since it definitely went into her lymph nodes, it can come out anywhere at any time, but the targeted therapy she is taking, seems to have stopped it for now.  Se will continue to take it for the rest of her life, and hopefully it will let her live a full life.  Let me know how your daughter is doing.
