Some interesting research being conducted in Seattle:

Eddie Mendez, the doctor who headed up this study, used to work with my sister, who runs the cochlear implant program at the Seattle VA. He quit that several years ago to work on the genetics of H&N cancer. He gave me a "virtual second opinion" when I was diagnosed in 2010. (He would have added some chemo, which I did not have, but otherwise agreed to the protocol.)
Sadly, he died last Friday of cancer, although I don't know what type. It seems like such a short time after getting this grant last June. I hope his colleagues at Fred Hutch and elsewhere in Seattle keep up his work.
There are a couple of other interesting stories on H&N cancer in Seattle in links at the bottom of the page. The one concerning filling primary care and other doctors in on the effects of our cancer treatment seemed particularly useful.
