Quality of life and surgery

I am an athlete that was diagnosed with esophageal cancer several months ago.  As an athlete,  I  am a big supporter of the quality of life and not quantity of life. From my perspective,  I don't know how anyone would agree to have their esophagus removed and the digestive system reconstructed. Life long side effects for an outside chance of getting the life extended.
