Gastrectomy and bile reflux

My wife had a Gastrectomy in may and everything has gone better than expected.

She suffers from Fibromyalgia as well and now is on new tablets for that.

Since about 4 weeks after discontinuing some antidepressants ,which helped her sleep, she has not been sleeping at all or very little.

Now her bile reflux has gotten quite bad,not helping at night, not allowing her to eat well. She is waiting for an endoscopy.

My question is, what medicine is there, for bile reflux, for people with out a stomach?

gaviscon is helping but not reducing excess bile, so what does reduce excess bile?

Ps I am her carer and we are from Scotland UK

Thanks

I would wonder if the reflux might be part of anxiety since going off the antidepressants.  So that might be something to check on as well.  Ask the doctor about melatonin a natural sleep aid.  She can also try a wedge pillow to sleep with her head higher to reduce the reflux.  I am also going to suggest another message board site called "no stomach for cancer" that has a lot of advise specifically for those that have had gastrectomy.  I hope that helps a little, and she gets much better.

My bile reflux was entirely due to a duodenal blockage. the type of food did not matter, an  hour or two after I ate, bile and fluid would fill my stomach to the pont of feeling like it was going to rupture. Antacids had no effect probably  because bile is not acid (it's alkaline)  although of the whole lot of them pepto bismol was most effective, likely because of the soothing coating effect (better than gaviscon).  I had to vomit to get rid of the bile, it did not go down.a stent solved most of that problem.

I am glad they found the problem and were able to give you some relief.  Sucralfate is a prescription drug that also helps to coat the stomach.  You can ask if that would be beneficial to you.  You may find the no stomach for cancer site helpful for suggestions and support in dealing with issues after gastrectomy.

First of all my all appriciation to you. you are doing great for your wife. I am in the same boat. My wife had PG 17 months back due to Stage 3 Adenocarcinoma. She is doing really well till date. Since last 2 weeks onl she has started facing issues like burning sessation and acid reflux and waking up during the night. I am little worried, whether to ask doctor or go for some scan

The only thing that almost eliminated my reflux and aspiration was training myself to sleep on my back. Eating a high fiber food like popcorn or an apple before bed also helped.
