Prophylactic head radiation for small cell lung cancer

My Mom was diagnosed about 4 months ago with small cell lung cancer.  She has went through 7 weeks of radiation and 3 rounds of chemo.  Trying to get 1 more round of chemo in but proven to be difficult because her wbc are low and now her liver levels are elevated.  The oncologist is recommeding 5-10 sessions of prophylactic whole head radiation. Has anyone else been recommended this as a safety precaution?  She did have a scan of her head and it came back clear with no signs of metastasizing. I would like to know if anyone else has had this recommended or if anyone has went through this if you have had any side effects?  Thank you for any feed back!
