Bowens Disease

I was having curettage to remove some largish Keratosis from my scalp. The Dermotologist said one looked squamous and he'd send it to the lab. It came back as Bowens Disease which I'd never heard of and can't find mentioned on here in skin cancer.

It is more medically known as 'Squamous Cell Carcinoma in situ' and is usually thought of as a pre-cancer although some say it is cancer. Mine looked like a keratosis but developed a red patch which crusted over. Bowens is restricted into the upper area of skin and hasn't gone into the lower areas and so isn't usually dangerous, but it can change. It can be treated with cream or PDT but my dermo said the best cure is surgery and so I had a skin graft about an inch diameter right on the top of my head.  The surgeons biopsy said its all gone but my skin is severely sun damaged.

I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has had Bowens removed by PDT, Efudix or other and how long it has been clear.

Hi,

Maybe I'm dumb but this site contains some 200 Efudix threads some of which contain 500 messages and searching on EFUDIX.+ or just Efudix brings up the same lists.

Which thread did you post on.

 Regards

Pete

Sorry Pete,

I should have been more clear. Follow this path.

Cancer Community > Cancer Message Board > Cancers > Skin Cancer > Skin Cancer Squamous Cell

Look at the latest and most recent EFUDIX thread. It was only started about 2 days ago, 31 August 2008.

Hope this helps

Hi,

I had two treatments of the Efudix cream - last one ended up with impetigo with the treatment, I will have to have this treatment no doubt again as some are returning and will be asking to see a skin dermatologist this time instead of the mole/skin dr I had been seeing. I also had it on my upper chest where the shirts/tops v neck open to the sun. I am fair skinned born snow blonde and born in Darwin where my infant book states sun kicks from birth by the time baby is 6 months should be out in full sun for an hour...I kid you not have photos of yours truely barely able to lift head on a sheet in the sun for my dictated 'sun kicks' my mother has dark tone to her skin.

I realise that while 1958 was the dark ages of medical skin science my fair skin is a so sun damaged makes me wonder what that infant nurse would say to me now in 2011.

Like you I could find squat on Bowens disease and the cream changed the pigmentation around my eyes so when I am tired etc looks like I have been sobbing my heart out...was told not my fault from dr hence not seeing him anymore.
