I'm not sure if I am doing this correctly. I am trying to respond to a posting about dumping syndrome after esophagectomy. Chief mentioned sandostatin injections and we would be very interested in learning more. There was no option under the posting telling us how to respond. My husband is having very similar symptoms that you described. He had his esophagectomy 11 months ago and he has moderate to severe cramping after each meal. He is also still slowly losing weight. If anyone has any helpful suggestions we would appreciate any information that could improve his quality of life. Thank you!

Dumping After Surgery

After I had surgery in Aug 04 (I'm almost to my one year anniversary !), and started to eat again, I had constant gas/diarrhea, and the nutritionists told me this was due to dumping, and to not drink liquids with my meals. I am not sure this really was dumping for me, because I discovered that I was lactose intolerant after surgery, and it was the dairy products causing the problems. After surgery, when I was able to begin taking food by mouth, I was fed cream based soups, yougert, etc, as they are all easily swallowed. They wanted me to not lose weight, so they recommended all the protein supplements, like Ensure, Boost, etc. Again, all milk based, and they caused awful gas/diarrhea. It was only after I stopped all the dairy products that this stopped. I did lose almost 60 lbs, but had it to lose, and I finally bottomed out on weight loss when my "input" was greater than my "output" !! It has taken this long for me to increase the size of meals from about 1/2 cup per meal to close to 2 cups per meal. Due to my weight loss, I am now off all medicine for high blood pressure, and diabetes, so there are some positives to all of this !! I am now eating almost anything I want, but have to really watch the ingredients on packaging to make sure they don't have dairy products; these can be hidden in strange names, and I have been surprised many times by products that have lactose in them, including sleeping pills !!! Good luck, and hope this helps!

My husband has suffered from severe diarrhea for the last 5 years -- ever since his esophagectomy. We have tried everything and have even been to the Mayo Clinic. The only medication that helps a bit is sandostatin. We've tried to eat certain foods or not eat ones, but the diarrhea continues to be very bad. Thanks.

My husband had EC diagnosed October 2006 and had chemo/radiation and now docs say is cancer free.  Recently surgeon says we still want to remove esphagus.  This is very scary for him as he now has a great quality of life and we have read about all the complications with the surgery.  How are you doing now?  any advice?

Thanks.
