I was in the hospital for 13-days, do not remember anything of the first week. My family was told I may not make it and supportive care was offered. Needless to say I did make it, however 4-weeks later I am still unable to what I had done prior to chemo due to fatigue. I was informed following this episode that it is very rare and they had never seen this type of reaction, and that I apparently had a deficiency in an enzyme called DPD which makes my body unable to metabolize the 5FU. Upon further research I found that approx. less than 5% of the population has this deficiency and those that do have had toxic reactions to 5FU, including death. I also found out there is a test for this enzyme, but was told by my oncologist it is not the standard of practice to test for DPD? I do highly recommed anyone who is about to recieve 5FU discuss with your physician the effects of DPD and 5FU, the odds are in your favor you will not have this deficiency since less than 5% of the population does, but I can assure you if you are in that 5% you do not want to have 5FU, I am truely very lucky to be alive today. I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who has had or knows someone who has had this reaction to 5FU.

After 4 days of receiving 5fu with a pump for esophigeal cancer I was hospitalized for 3 weeks (no memory of hospital stay)  plus 2 weeks of therapy due to DPD deficiency. My Dr said he did not give me the DPD test because he did not believe in it. I have balance problems, short term memory problems, and tremors 9 monhs after treatment. I went to MD Anderson and was given the DPD test during my 1st visit and told I would not be given chemo/radiation therapy due to DPD deficiency, instead I had a minor surgical procedure and am cancer free.

Dear Cancer Compass

You may not realize it, but at times, your blog and your effort directly saves lives.  I am so very full of joy today.

Although I am suffering severe Chemo-brain.  Like GriffinMike may still suffer the rest of his life.  But he sures sounds happy.

Based on your oncoligists opinion and my oncologists opinion they obviously think it is ok to kill 5% of those that get the 5FU therapy. That kind of thinking needs to change.

Dear 5FU folks.  You are so naive to believe what oncology departments say about 5FU safety.  To catch up with this current conversation, I spoke one of the key witness / oncology experts and was shocked to hear my suspicions were confirmed.  About 2005 Congress (of some level) voted to OK this 5FU as it appeared that after 20  years testing, it might have helped 10% of the people.  As was my case, patients are scared to death about their own mortality, naturally.  In this case my oncology doctorswere told bad information. What?  “Bad information, but profitable information”.  Today, the 5FU company is partnering with a dozen other university experimental testing when they ‘ADDED BLUE SCORPION VENOM’ to the ‘5FU-SYNTHESISED VENOM’; now in trials.  Dear GriffinMike and others, please know that doctors will make you sick just as they did me, they will profit by prolonging your oncology treatment. 5FU is manufactured from insect venom, toxins, poisons and will shut down your immune system.  A supercharged immune system is (my opinion) created by God placed in mankind to redesign itself to attack and battle the disease in your body. So, please look into corti-steriod IVIg meds and blood transfusion to kick start your white blood cells. When you write on Cancer Compass compliment doctors who did well, did great, and report those facts. But don’t pussy-foot and protect oncology doctors who are poisoning-for-profit with 5FU.  Those are the facts jack, mike, Griff and everyone else.  AND pay attention.  Some paid for doctor / writer who is paid to flop and to write the fake news will come on here soon, later to say how ‘my mom had a great recovery …. Bull sh*t’.

DaveBartholomewyou are right, the healthcare system and the oncologists want to make as much profit as possible which is one reason not to give patients the DPD tests which would exclude 5% of the patients and the profits. They will give you the 5FU drug even if it kills you to get what profit they can. The oncologists don’t give patients the DPD tests because it is not part of the “standard procedure”. It put me in the hospital for 3 weeks near death from the 5FU. To finish off the kill they overhydrated me filling my lungs with fluid, fortunately for me my wife was vocal enough with the doctor to get him to get rid of the fluids which he had ordered and then I was told I had 6 months to live. The criminal behavior or total incompetence drives the costs up and is obviously part of why insurance companies wont have anything to do with mission healthcare. Oncologists can use the “standard procedure” as a cop out when they kill you or leave you alive with permanent health complications. Check out the homicide and 5FU statistics, oncologists get rid of more people than criminal murderers do in a year. Why aren’t the oncologists behind bars for murder and attempted murder?

Dear 5FU folks.

5FU is derived from venom.  Venom is the most toxic element, from ants, spiders, centipedes, jellyfish, poison oak AND universities experiment with your life to now intoduce new 5FU Toxins for the marketplace.  DPD is, or should be the oppposite.  95% of patients will be toxified by venom poisons, nerve toxins, BECAUSE that what the drug is, a poison to your nerves, you metabolism, immune system.  So 'Oh!' I didn't have an immediate allergic reaction?   Well, ask you body if you have less energy today, for each day, the rest of the year.  Or, Chronic Fatigue, Chronic Pain.  Oh.  One other thing 5FU causes Chemo-Brain.   The oncolgy industry makes money the more you get sick / the opposite occurs when you get better!  They lose money.  Sad, sad truth; oncologist's don't care if you get better, it's a coin toss.

Boyfriends advanced stage 4 gastric-esophageal thrived with 5fu. Oncologist forgot to take CEA blood tests to set as a marker to gauge how the 5fu was effecting the tumor. He had a pump 6 days a week 24 hours a day pumping 5 Fu. After having surgery they gave it to him again, but in pill form to help him be more suseptable to the radiation. His Cancer came back and it thrived again. Ironically, the pill came with all of these hazmat warnings, with instructions to wear gloves, eye protection, and not to touch with bare hand, yet he’s suppose to swallow this thing! Desperate, he did the Rick Simpson Cannibis Oil and his Cancer immediately disappeared. He CT scans continue to report NED (no evidence of disease) still to this day. That was back in 2015. 5fu is a new twist on “snake oil” if it’s make from venom. Terrible.

Exactly.  They tried to give it to my relative without running the test.  It was asked if they ran the test.  The oncologist said order the test and cancel the chemo and then the next morning dropped my relative as a patient..... hmmm.
