Carac First Time User

I'm new to this site as I found out this morning.  I will start Carac use this week for the first time.  My dermatologist gave me the option of entire face application or small sections at different times.  I'm going with the entire face to be done with it!

My profession requires me to work closely with the public.   Am I going to scare the h*ll out of them after about 2 weeks?  Anyone else in a similar situation and what have your experiences been?

Thanks for your time and for being willing to share information.

Rockachaw, welcome to the site.

I think Carac treatment is a little different for everyone, but if your Dr. is prescribing it then I'd assume there's a good chance your skin will react.

I'll be honest, it can be a bit unsightly and very unpleasant.  Sorry.  The good news is that the results are worth it.

Week 3 tends to be the worst for most of us.  There's a long thread on this site (if you haven't found it already) that covers just about everything you'll want to know during the upcoming weeks.  Here's a link:

http://www.cancercompass.com/message-board/message/all,4537,

My advice would be to remember that we all tend to be over-critical of our own appearance.  It's cliche, but we don't look as bad as we think we do.  It does get difficult to face the public.  I was fortunate enough to have some time off during treatment, but some things simply can't be avoided.

The interesting thing about flouracil cream is that it only reacts to damaged cells.  No damage, no reaction.  Try to keep that in mind during the upcoming weeks, because an angry reaction simply verifies the need for the treatment (hope that makes sense).

Anyway, welcome aboard and good luck.  Let us know if we can help.

Hi Rochachaw -  I'm in the same boat.  I also work with the public and am trying to figure out when to start Carac.  My dermatologist told me today that I could wait a few months since that is a quieter time work wise, but now I'm considering starting it so I can get it over with.

I truly appreciate the comments posted to this message board.  It is so helpful to know I'm not alone in working through this treatment.

Here again a first time user...

I have read most of the posts on this site and am grateful for the vast amount of information. I think at day 8 of Carac tratment to my face and backs of hands it was time to post my first experiences.

So first I will introduce and give a bit of history so my tratment progess is reported here.

Born and raised in South Florida, Strawberry Blonde, green eyes, freckles but small.

My parents were avid fishermen, my 4 brothers were surfers  and I have always lived on the water..I have severe cluster migraine and stroke out after 15 minutes in the sun without a hat.So naturally I have always avoided the sun to some degree. Being 50, there was no such thing as sunblock when I was growing up so I have been cooked a few times..

In the Last 3 years I began my check ups with all the doctors and dentists I neglected while raising and paying  2 children  to college..

By the time I got to the dermatologist, I just picked anyone, big mistake.

Firstly, it was my first time and I really just have patchy/freckly skin that I know must have some damage. Yup she found 2 cancers BCC anSCC on my neck & proceded to buzz around my forhead and elbow with liquid Nitro...I had no idea what she was doing and she was very matter a fact. She scared the daylights out of me.

Very unprofessional in many ways...

I happen to be on friendly terms with the top guy in my area and was so freaked out that I was able to get an appointment with him...ThanK God...Because appointments with him are 6 month waiting list...I see him every few weeks since this began last Juneand am now a permanent customer.

He reviewed the Biopsy results and explained what was going on..he also did a full exam...and removed the tumors..

In the mean time I had a strange leison erupt on my ankle while I was on vacation...Hurt like hell, I thought I got an infection/absess when I got a pedicure...Nope so weird Keritmicnoma(I don't even want to researce this oneor care about the spellinng) Skin Cancer, very agressive tumor.Well I wound up with a whole 2 inches in diameter and the pain was up there and couldent walk for weeks, and I suffer serious cronic pain and this was at a 10 on a 1-10 scale...Besides the oozing & sensitivity

Now we continue with normal skin cancer stuff....

He said do have quite a few AK's and has prescribed a Carac Treatment to be evaluated in 10 Days..He did tell me it would get bad as far as irritation around day 6...Well,at day 8 I have had barely a reaction so far..I'm hoping it is because my skin is not so damaged(wishfull thinking)...but In having fair skin it is not alergic skin and I do avoid the sun more for the stroke out reasons than sunburn.

He said I could have as few as 4 AK's light up or as many as 40...

I feel a little sensitivity but no discomfort yet..I hope it works because now I want to do my chest and arms and legs(I think I may have another of the crazy itchy ones on my other leg that I'm going to have him do something about next week) after reading this forum, but  the waiting for the reaction is hard..I too am in the public eye as a musician and teacher and do not want to scare my students.

Day 8 and counting...will keep an update..

Tutti

Hi Tutti,

Welcome to the site.  That growth on your leg sounds a bit scary, good thing you had it taken care of.

Keep us posted on the carac treatment and good luck.

I'm starting Carac today.  I was going to wait a few months since I'm busy at work, but after reading so many posts about this treatment, I've decided to begin.  I see my doctor in two weeks, so I have no clue what I'll be experiencing at that time.  Would welcome any advice about working through this treatment.

Welcome Noranne. Go to all side effects from carac. There you will find all the information you want as others are in all different times in  the procedure process. It was so helpful. Hang in there. You are in for quite a ride. LInda

Today is day 9 and no real reaction..My derm office called to confirm my Monday appointment so I asked if my reaction was expected..The nurse said it meant that I would be continuing the treatment for at least the 21-28 days.

I do feel a little stinging and a little itchy but nothing red....I am glad for this forum because I have a list of questions for the Doctor.

1. Does he expect me to get red or blisters, before I stop? Since it seems the reaction continues after stopping for a short period before the healing.

2. Can I spot treat itchy AK's on my leg..?

3. Can I begin my chest and get this ugly mess started? AND OVER WITH...

4. What exactly does he wish me to wash and lub with when it does get bad? I've got quite a collection from all of you on this board so  am armed with cetaphil soap, aquahpor, aveeno, unscented baby wipes..advil as I have loads of pain meds and anxiety meds I never take but probably should..

Waiting for the eruption!

Thanks Linda for the suggestion.   Tutti - thanks for your post because I'm on day 4 and have not had a reaction yet.   I suppose patients can react differently, but I'm not sure when to expect the more pronounced reactions that have been described.

As much as I'm anxious about how bad this might be, I'm glad I made the jump to get it started instead of putting it off three months.  Again, I really appreciate the information sharing here.
