Anyone know of any supplement which should not be taken along with Tarceva, that could lower it's potency?

Despite what your oncologist might tell you, there is no scientific evidence that taking any vitamins while on Tarceva; will interfere with the treatment. There is good clinical evidence that antioxidants taken during chemotherapy will help to decrease the side effects of chemo, and be beneficial for improved survival.

My husband was diagnosed with stage 4 non small cell cancer over 2 years ago. He has been on Tarceva since. He has been taking lots of vitamins from the beginning, including Melatonin 6mg at bedtime. Melatonin improves the immune system.

Let me know if you need to know more in details what supplements you should be taking. Also do not underestimate the importance of eating a good balanced diet. Fat is very important, along with vegetables, fruit grains, and proteins.

Good luck.

I'm starting Tarceva today.   Could you please share what supplements you are taking with this?   I'm taking some, but have been wondering if it was ok.  I know you can't take St. John's Wort with it, but I'm not taking that.  Thanks for your time!

My husband has been on Tarceva for 6 weeks now, together with Zometa. I would be grateful for any advice on supplements and nutrition. I've gleaned advice from various books and suffers, so am giving him: CoenzymeQ10, Multi-vitamins, magnesium/calcium/Vit D;Glucosimine & Chrondotin (for his arthritic knees) Astralagus, Ginseng, Green Tea. I also give him half to one pawpaw per day, either as fruit or juice. I also understand that Asparagus spears have wondrous properties too, though haven't tried that yet. I'm also juicing fruit and veg daily. Does anyone know how what is the longest survival on Tarceva. I've heard 2-2.5 years - any longer than that?

I don't believe that you should eat grapefruit  while on tarceva.  Please check this out. LOVE & PEACE!

Hello Alba3,

I have been taking tarceva now for about a year as I have lung cancer.  I have been told that antioxidants can reduce the strength of tarceva.

And yes Alba3, I would like to hear in detail what supplements you and your husband feel are necessary with the tarceva.

Thank you for sharing!

Sincerely,

Greenberg

Hi Greenberg. The supplements I think you shoudl be taking are:

Melatonin 3mg about 1/2 hr before going to bed

Vitamin D3 5,000 u. a day

Vitamin C (ascorbyl palmitate) 500mg 3 times a day with meals

epa/dha (fish oil) 1,000mg twice a day with meals. If fish oil repeats on you keep it in the freezer and take it frozen.

Probiotics 1 or 2 capsules a day.

Good luck.

Alba

Balance and synergistic is key!  On the American Anti-Cancer Institute website is some information on this.  Under recommendations is a tab call "Extreme Nutrition" that is highly promoted to help all cancer patients.
