long term effects of taking Hydroxurea for ET

Hi, I'm 26 years old and was recently diagnosed with Essential Thrombocytosis.  My platelet levels are around one million and have been trending upward the past 6 months, so they are going to start me on Hydroxurea.  Does anyone know what the long-term effects of taking this drug are?  Also, does anyone know whether people with ET have a "normal" life expectancy (assuming they are diagnosed and treated for ET)?  I'm especially nervous because I'm young and there is a long period of time for things to go wrong.  My strategy right now is to do the best I can with diet/exercise so at least I'm healthy otherwise.  Thanks for your help.
