hi all,

my husband is 8 months post op for esophageal cancer and had the gastric pull up. last test results pet scan and biopsy were all negative. my question is he is having really bad acid reflux, is there  any natural products that might relieve him it seems to be getting worse.

thank you and god bless you,

hi kady,i am 13 months post surgery. i do have some occassions for acid reflux but in general not too bad. i am on prilosec. there are others on various anti acid reflux medication. my oncologist tells me i need to be on anti reflux medication for the rest of my life.

the one thing i try and do is to finish my evening meal before 8 pm and have at least 3 hours before i go to bed. some people use a wedge pillow.

good luck and wonderful that your husband came through his surgery with great results.

Don't know why it works, but husband eats peeled apple as last food each night and it stopped his reflux. Know quite a few others who have tried this after the pullup and it has worked for just about all of them.

As mentioned in the other post, raising headboard so bed is on angle and adding a wedge pillow should also help. There is something natural made with oranges (can't remember what it was called). It was supposed to keep acid down in stomach. Didn't work here, but have a friend it worked for but he is not an EC patient and still has a functioning valve.

Drugs for motility may help too. The food may be sitting there and coming back up, so a motility drug moves it out of the stomach faster. Protonix or prilosec do not affect motility although they help with other issues.

Does your husband sleep on his stomach?

I sleep on a wedge (bedge) and I find that I will have a reflux episode if I roll over onto my stomach.  It seems that the pressure pushes anything that is in there up.  This is the only time I have problems.  I am on generic prevacid for the duration.

Good luck stopping this as it is terrible to go through.

My husband sleeps on his back and he uses a bed wedge. The gastro doc gave him carafate but it seems to bother him.

Thank you Jim for the info.

The (organic) apple thing works for me too. I chew the seeds for the laetrile every day, an apple or two a day keeps a doctor or two away.

Graned, I have not had any such surgery but I did have full birth sized twins 45 years ago. And when I got very large this tore my hiatus and gave me hiatal hernia, maybe cuz I was overall otherwise small.

Was aware peach and apricot seeds had laetrile, but not apples. Pat eats the apple...not the seeds. I thought apple seeds contain arsenic and should not be consumed?
