John,

Your analysis about sugar is not exactly correct.  Yes all additive sugar(s) (especially High Fructose Corn Syrup) need to be eliminated.  That means NO sodas (duh) and NO fruit juices - especially no Orange Juice (fresh or otherwise).  All fruits are carbohydrates but they can be eaten safely because they have not had any of their fiber removed.  Fiber is the key to managing the metabolic issues associated with glucose and fructose consumption.  Watch the YouTube lecture given by Dr. Robert H. Lustig called, "Sugar - The Bitter Truth" to get the science and sorry history of why there is far too much sugar in the typical "western" diet today and what you can do about it.

Better still, read the book: "Life Over Cancer" by Dr. Keith I. Block to learn about the best supplements for cancer sufferers.

Also it is not the case that you should simply consume excess amounts of certain anti-oxidants like Vitamin A, C, or E.  In fact there is some evidence (and a new theory just put forth by James Watson, one of the discoverers of the structure of DNA) that excess anti-oxidants may be the cause of some tumors.

Finally, I have stage IV (metastatic) renal cancer.

I am now approaching the end of my 4th cycle of taking the targeted anti-angiogenic drug Sutent.  Each cycle means taking 50mg/day for 4 weeks followed by 2 weeks off.  I started on it this past August.

In all this time I have had NO significant side effects from taking this "dreaded" drug at all. This, I believe, is only due to my diet and certain supplements that I take.

The Diet: No meat - with the exception of plenty of cold-water fish and/or seafood.  No dairy products whatsoever.  No added sugar(s) or items that have sugar(s) added. Only complex carbohydrates (i.e. no white rice, no white bread, no white flour, etc.).  Maintainence of an Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acid ratio of no more than 3:1.

Of course there is much more to it. This diet and some of the supplements I take are also explained in detail in the book, "Life Over Cancer" by Dr. Keith I. Block.  Lots of information is also posted on the Block Integrative Cancer Center website.

Here are some other important resources for those who wish to minimize side effects and/or prevent the occurrance of new mets:

1.  "The China Study" by T. Colin Campbell, Ph. D and Thomas M. Campbell II.

2. "Forks Over Knives" (video documentary).

3. "Anti-Cancer - A New Way of Life" by Dr. David Servan-Schreiber.

4. "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease" by Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr.

5. "Fat Chance - Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease" by Dr. Robert H. Lustig.

6. "Can We Eat to Starve Cancer?" (TEDTalk available on YouTube) by Dr. William Li.

I am a firm believer in SBM (science-based medicine).  These resources and countless other studies suggest the essential need for any cancer sufferer to: 1) change to a "proper" diet; 2) add additional "appropriate" supplements as necessary; 3) follow their oncologist's recommended drug or radiation therapy.

If you (or anyone else) are interested I have prepared a 35-page .pdf document that explains the science and rationale behind what I am doing in far more detail.

Send me a private message so we can exchange direct email addresses and I will be happy to foward a copy.

The best immunopower vitamin supplement that I have heard of is Beta Glucan.  However, not all Beta Glucan works the same.  Beta Glucan has been sold in the past in Japan with perscription only but now you can get the high potency here in the U.S.  To order go to www.restartyl.com /appleaday

Also read the book called Beta Glucan Nature's Secret by

Vaclav Vetvicka, Ph.D.

Hope that helps.

I have been taking the maintenance dose of immunopower for about a year now.  I buy the larger quantity to keep the cost at about $80 per month.  Immunopower maintenance dose supplements are working for me.  My brief history: radical prostatectomy in 1999, radiation and hormone therapy in 2005.  My psa level started to climb again after the hormone injections wore off, so I made radical lifestyle changes.  Hardcore nutrition changes with exercise and supplements.  After a couple of years of trial and error and regular psa tests, I finally figured out how to control my psa level.  My oncologist says I am the only guy he has ever seen who can control a rising psa with nutrition and lifestyle changes.  I like to think that immunopower has helped as far as the supplements are concerned.  They have everything in it, plus more, than I was taking individually and it's cheaper.

Now for the rest of my story:  My conclusions (opinions) learned the hard way. Needle biopsies release cancer cells into the blood stream.  SUGAR feeds cancer cells.  A strong immune system kills cancer cells.  Radiation damages the immune system.  Soy raises psa levels.  Sugar raises psa levels.  Wine raises psa levels.  Pure distilled spirits do not raise psa levels but don't help the immune system either.  In order to beat cancer you must starve the cancer cells of sugar and strengthen the immune system.  Not easy.  The only sugar that is ok are those high in anti-oxidants like blueberries, blackberries and pure fresh orange juice.  I sweeten everything with stevia.  Stevia is the only safe sweetener and it does not make my psa go up.  Essiac tea seems to help also.  I have lots of other trial and error stuff for anyone that is interested.  My psa is now 0.07 and slowly dropping.  Undetectible is my goal.  I don't believe that the cancer cells will ever totally be gone but at least I can control it.
