Hi. Im 3 weeks post treatment.  6 weekly cisplatin and 30 daily rads mon to fri. My taste has been hit very hard and i am still dependent on a feeding tube. Im desperate to start drinking orally but so far have only managed sips of black tea.

Does anyone have any advice of what worked for them? My cancer was base of tongue. Thanks x

My husband found Alkaline water tasted good during and after similar treatment. His taste gradually came back, at least to a point, but he still says the alkaline water tastes the best.

Coconut water was better than plain water, also but not as good as alkaline.

He also got a small spray bottle (from travel section of grocery store) and filled it with water to help keep his mouth moist.

By the way - the "Head and Neck" message board is pretty active, and may be of help to you as well.

Catherine,

Ginger ale was the best for me.  (Schweppe's and Canada Dry) It was fine even flat, which was good because I often didn't finish a whole can.  I also could tolerate applesauce, so applejuice might have been OK too.

In the meantime be sure to stay well hydrated with the tube.  Flush it with several syringes of water whenever you consume a can of formula.

And I second the notion that you check the head and neck forum here.  I only saw this post because it was on the weekly newsletter.

All the best,

Susan

I had the same problem. I started drinking ensure with a straw that I put as far back in my throat as I could get it and still suck it out of the bottle so I didn't have to have it in my mouth. After a while it got easier to drink and my taste started to come back slowly. It is a long road getting your taste back. It took me two years to get to where I could eat almost everything I used to eat. It never came back completly but I do enjoy most foods again.

This takes a while. The best thing to do is keep trying. It is a slow process but the worst is behind you.

All the best,

Andrew

Keep fighting!  My father has tongue cancer so we are exploring alternatives now since I don't think he could manage the barbaric surgery they want to do.  It's so difficult. I'm sorry you are going through this, but keep fighting on and hang in there.

There are so many fantastic products in health food stores that are liquid or powder that can be added to liquid to give you added nutritional support. (Protein ready-to-drinks, green powder drinks, mineral/electrolyte mixes...)  They all can be added to water, and help provide nutrition in every sip.  Green tea is excellent for cancer too.  Blessings and hang in there!

One of the staff recommended organic peach tea with sugar or honey. It's been one of the only things that has tasted good to him. He was not a hot tea drinker before cancer.
