Please help me cope with taste problem, I am 35 year old and had tongue cancer, after 30 siting of radiation and 5 cispltn chemo. It has been almost 5 months gone after treatment bit I didn't have taste buds coming back...not swallow and chew problem.

Everything I will try to ate it becomes dry and stuck in mouth cz there has no taste so than no salvia to swallow the food.

I am on semisolid food and half baked egg..mashed bread...but that too is tasteless.

I can feel some salt and sweet taste while eating first bite and there after its gone totally.

Can't eat spicy thing it burns.

When and how will I get my taste back

Pls help someone...

dubeyonly,

You have probably read here that each person reacts to treatments and recovery at different time frames. I didn't start to taste milk until about the 4th month out of treatment. The same with salt and peper. It was nearly 2 years before I could taste chocolate, which I am making up lost time for now.

I have no saliva what so ever, so eating soft moist foods is what I tend to stick to. Pasta, eggs, soups, etc. You will find a "New Normal" with your foods. One person here suggested to try eating at a Buffet location about every 3 months to see what works for you at that time. Go back to see what didn't work the last time to see if it works for you then.

Things get better, but not at the speed we want them to. Be patient, it may seem like you are taking one step forward and two steps back at times, but keep moving forward with your thoughts.

My Best to You and Everyone Here

Hi dubeyonly,

Though you are technically posting this in the correct message board, seeing as you are asking a question "after treatment" but, you may want to do some searching in the "Head and Neck" message board.  There are a lot of us that have gone through the same tastelessness you describe.  As previously stated, we all develop a new normal post treatment.  I consider myself very lucky, I have almost all my saliva back but swallowing is a challenge.  I have to always have a drink handy when eating.  This helps whatever I'm eating go down easier.

Regards,

Jeff
