Recurrence VERY WORRIED

Hello,

I have (had) oropharyngeal BOT stage 3 T2N1M0 HPV + cancer and completed my 35 sessions about a year ago.  I recently had a sore throat and is just getting over it but I feel tightness when swallowing and feel the same sensation of having something stuck in my throat like I did before my surgery and radiation.

I am very worried that this is a recurrence and going to urgent care today to have it checked out.

Has anyone experienced this and should i be worried? Anyone with any input on this would be very helpful. Thank you

Hi -

Yes, I panic any time I have an unusual feeling in my throat.  Sometimes it's just a sore throat, sometimes there is a piece of popcorn lodged in the narrower opening, sometimes it's a muscle cramp in the neck.  5 years post-treatment I am just now starting to not feel things in my throat anymore.

You had a relatively small tumor, one node and no mets.  Statistically you're at low risk for recurrence.  Most people are Stage 4 at diagnosis.  Surgery and radiation are most likely the culprits for your symptoms.

Get it checked so you can stop worrying.

Hello I just got my scan for my 9 month post treatment. And I am on pins and needles as I am every time I go for checkup. I do have a felling when I swollow but my Ent scopes and does not seem to be worried. He said you had some heavy stuff done to that area. I can only put trust in him and God but will go to rt doc this Thursday and hope scans look good. I know how you feel. Well all the best to all. Will hopefully post a good report after Bob

Hi Chuckp,

I'm 2 1/2 years out frm SSC BOT HPV+ cancer.  My oncologist told me that recurrence of the cancer in the same location is very low.  If there is a 2nd occurrence, he said it typically goes into your lungs or brain.

Being 2 1/2 years out, I'm still adjusting to my new normal.  The side of my neck where the radiation was focued is still "evolving".  I get tingling, to sorness to any combination of irritants.   At times I swallow fine, other times I kind of vomit a little back into my mouth because food gets stuck.(sorry if that is gross but that is pretty much what happends).

There are other thread on here with input from others who are farther out from treatment than I am.  They too experience similar type of issues with their throats.

I really hope this issue you are having is just the evolution to your new normal and not arecurrence.

Best wishes.

Jeff

Thanks for your feedback Jeff! Now that you mention it, I remember my oncologist saying the same thing about the recurrence happening in the same place is very low. I just get freaked out when the feeling comes back.  Thank god for this forum and people like you who share their experiences.

I am a year and 2 months out of treatment for stage 3 nasopharangyl cancer . 33 radiations 6 of 7 chemos and a bottle of neupogen . No surgery . I am 64 and about 165 lbs .  The only thing that is a must do for recovery is activity , excersise , and healthy eating . This brought me back from the darkside enough to start to look forward to the oncoming days . I still battle side effects like chills , nausea , dry mouth , stiff swallowing , more nausea . Sleeping through the night can sometimes be an issue . When I went for treatment I retired and now the extra free time can be an issue. I am handy with my hands so I guess as long as I can keep my mind on other things I won't be dwelling on this stupid cancer . I am improving month by month and hope some of these after effects will diminish . I think the most effective recovery tool I have is a wife of 43 years that had my back . Thanks John

YES!  I seem to recall being told that if you're afraid of a recurrence, don't look on the side on which you were treated; look on the other side.
