Scootersmom, I am in the group now, thank you! It’s sad to see just how common TCC has become in dogs. My vet said it used to be relatively rare and now they are seeing it so much more frequently. I wish I had known that fertilizers and chemicals cause this - it’s undoubtedly what caused Simba’s since I live in a condo and they both spray for mosquitos and treat the lawn with fertilizer 2-3 time a year. Yes he was originally just taking the Piroxicam and an antibiotic, then his appetite was non-existent and he would only eat chicken and scrambled eggs. So we added in the Sucralfate in the morning and Pepcid before dinner. After 4 days of adding those in, he wouldn’t eat at all. Not even treats. So hopefully pulling all meds for a couple days will give his stomach a break. It’s also possible that the cancer has just progressed (though I’m praying that’s not the case.)
Thanks Scootersmom! I’m still working my way through all of the posts on here (lots of information to digest) but it looks like any current discussion is happening through the Facebook group. My 14.5 year old min pin, Simba, has been diagnosed with unconfirmed TCC (unconfirmed mainly because I’m not willing to put him through extensive testing to confirm for sure). Like many of you here, he started with what we suspected to be bladder infections back in August of 2019 and after multiple rounds of antibiotics that seemed to help somewhat, but never completely resolved the blood in his urine, the vet suspected cancer and started him on Meloxicam which was mainly for his bad arthritis in his back. At one point he seemed to get really bad, whining and shivering so I ended up taking him to the emergency vet (as of course it happened on a weekend when my regular vet was closed) where they were able to do a quick ultrasound and saw what looked like a tumor in the Trigone region, and thickening of the bladder wall in some spots. We then switched him to Piroxicam and he’s been on an antibiotic for about two months straight. Since stumbling across this thread I’ve since also switched his food to no carb (other than broccoli and cauliflower, and whatever little bit may be in his Zesty Paws Supplements) and have added in sucralfate and Pepcid but now he is showing no interest in any food/treats and is vomiting and has diarrhea. I’m thinking of pulling him off ALL meds for a bit to give his stomach a break. And I’m praying it’s just the meds and not a sign that his time is close. I’m very thankful for this board/thread as it has helped us immensely, and has given me hope that he may have months left with me. I just lost my other (first born) furbaby back in mid December and I don’t think my heart can handle losing another one so soon after. Nicole (Simba’s mom)

Is this thread still monitored? I submitted a request to join the Facebook group a week ago and am still waiting to be approved. Can someone please ask the admin to approve my request?
